T-Mobile USA getting Blackberry Onyx/Driftwood in September?

Ok..this got me excited! Apparently according to BGR and Crackberry, T-Mobile USA will be launching the Blackberry Onyx/Driftwood (we’re not sure about the exact name yet)  as early as September 2009. This new member of the family is believed to be a 3G-enabled 8900-style BlackBerry. Apparently despite the appearance of a trackball in the pictures of the pre-production unit above, BGR thinks this device will have an optical trackpad at launch such as the 8520 Curve. This means this unit should pretty much look like the 8520 but has what we’ve been really waiting for….3G in a Blackberry launched by T-Mobile USA. It is also believed that this device will be part of the 96xx family.

Here are the specs we know of:

  • AWS 1700MHz + 2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA
  • 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera
  • GPS
  • Wi-Fi
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Optical trackpad
  • 480×360 screen
  • Carbon fiber-esque back battery cover (the whole back is a carbon fiber pattern apparently)
  • Much sexier than the BlackBerry 8900

We have no price as of yet, but should be around the $199 range with a 2-year agreement. We’ll try to keep you posted if more scoops emerge about this unit!

Thanks BGR and Crackberry!
