Apple announces iPhone 4, Pre-Order June 15th-Available June 24th

Today was the day most of us were waiting for…iPhone 4 was announced at WWDC 2010. Although we all knew what the new iPhone 4 would look like thanks to previous leaks, it’s still exciting to see the official announcement. The new iPhone 4 features a front/back glass and has a stainless steel band all around it which is part of the antenna system. According to some of our fellow bloggers that got the chance to play with a unit today at WWDC, the new design makes the iPhone feel less slippery and will definitely be more scratch resistant.

Here are the 8 main features Steve Jobs talked about at WWDC 2010 regarding the new iPhone 4

#1 Design

Steve Job describes it at the most beautiful thing they’ve ever made “Its closest kin is a beautiful old camera”. The iPhone 4 is thinner then the iPhone 3Gs, 9.3mm thick, 24% thinner than the 3GS. Steve calls it the thinnest smartphone on the planet. Looking at the new design, we’ve got our volume/mute buttons on one side, micro sim tray on the other, 30 Pin Connector, Speaker & Microphone at the bottom. On the top we have our headset jack, second mic as well as power/sleep/wake button. What’s stands out on the new iPhone 4 is the front facing camera and LED flash at the back.

#2 Retina Display

We’re told that no other phone has a display like this. The iPhone 4 features a Retina display which has 326 pixels per inch. This will increase the sharpness of text/webpage/pictures. According to the feedback we’ve gotten, the display is also brighter. The new iPhone 4 has a 3.5″ screen (same size as iPhone 3GS), but at 960×640 pixels it’s 4x more pixels then it’s predecessor. I personally love the display on the iPhone so i’m pretty excited to see this one.

#3 Processor, Battery, Radio & Storage

iPhone 4 is powered by the A4 chip and also has a bigger battery. iPhone should now get you 5 to 7 hours of 3G talktime, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music and 300 hours of standby. Can’t wait to test these out myself. Poor battery life on the iPhone has always been a downer for me. Up to 32GB of storage, Quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA for 7.2Mbps down and 4.8 Mbps up. The iPhone 4 also features a dual-mic system for noise cancellation, 802.11n WiFi.

#4 Gyroscope

Apple has added a 3-axis gyroscope in iPhone 4 which combined with the accelerometer allow for 6-axis motion sensing which is great for gaming.

#5 Camera

5 megapixels for the iPhone 4′s main camera. According to Apple, the backside illuminated sensor will allow better low-light pictures. 5x digital zoom built into camera application, LED flash that can also be fully functional when shooting video. Great news, you can now record in HD with 720p at 30fps. Imagine that, you can  record HD videos right from your iPhone 4, edit them, and then e-mail or upload them to YouTube. Also available in the App store will be iMovie for $4.99. To my opinion, Apple should of included as part of the package, but i’m pretty sure it’s well worth the price. iMovie a mobile movie editing application that will let you rearrange clips; add photos, transitions, titles and music. The camera also records geolocation which you can then use in iMovie.

#6 iOS 4

The new iPhone OS which is renamed iOS4 will feature multitasking…finally! Apple has made one of the best UI better. You know have folders. When you drag apps together to make a folder, you can name that folder or it can automatically name the folder  depending on what kind of apps you drop in the folder. Folders can also be dragged in the dock. We also get new features in Mail such as unified inbox, threading and better enterprise integration (better data protection, device management, multiple exchange support, SSL VPN support, Exchange Server 2010).

#7 iBooks

Famous iBooks app that can be found in the iPad is now brought the iPhone. You will now be able to have iBooks on your iPad, iPhone and iPod. Let’s say you start reading a book on your iPad, you can then continue where you left off on your iPhone with all your notes and bookmarks. Once you buy a book, you can download it on your iPod, iPad and iPhone at no extra charge. I personally became a big fan of iBook on my iPad. I just love the way I can change the fonts, highlight and use the dictionary.

#8 iAds

Apple has been selling iAds for 8 weeks and they claim to do it for one reason “to help developers earn money while still continue to make free and low-cost apps”. I’m not a big fan of pop-up ads but to some it’s ok, at least when you get the app for free. We also see that some big rollers have been using iAds such as Nissan, State Farm, Target, Best Buy, Disney & much more! Apparently Nissan will also be giving away a free car and you can enter through the Ad. Great marketing if you ask me. iAds should go live July 1st 2010.

#9 FaceTime Video Calling

We all knew it was coming with the front facing camera. You will now be able to Video Call with your iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi (for now at least until carriers get their networks ready..AT&T you listening?). You can use the front camera or even the one in the back for the other person to see what you’re seeing.

Final Thoughts

That’s pretty much it…what other can I say then “iSold”. Yup I will be pre-ordering the iPhone 4 on June 15th. If you live in the US, UK, Germany, France or Japan you’ll be able to pre-order it online June 15th and pick it up on the 24th or have it delivered . In the US, AT&T will sell the 16GB model for $199 and the 32GB model for $299 (on a 2-year contract or for eligible upgrades). In July, 18 more countries including Canada will launch the iPhone 4, 24 more countries in August and in September 40 more.

The iPhone 4 will be available in Black & White.
